Description

Position Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the school principal, to provide sign language interpreting services when one of the district's interpreters is away from his/her position.  Substitute SLIs may be called upon to fill a variety of different interpreting assignments at the elementary, middle, or high school level on an "as needed" basis.

 

Essential Functions:

The following description is illustrative of the tasks and responsibilities associated with this position.  It is not meant to be an inclusive list of every task or responsibility.

  • Provides sign to voice/voice to sign interpreting which may include Signed Exact English, American Sign Language, or other forms of manual communication based on the needs of the student.
  • Consults with classroom teachers and other staff members to help facilitate communication.
  • Provides general classroom support and outside supervision of students on an as-needed basis.
  • Works with audiologists, deaf educators, and/or special educators to monitors the use and implementation of audio support systems intended to improve the student’s ability to receive auditory input.
  • Provides interpreting for extracurricular activities and other meetings outside of the school day, as required.
  • Assists with classroom adaptations as determined by the student's IEP.
  • Provides other educational support services, such as tutoring and/or notetaking, when interpreting is not needed.
  • Maintains appropriate certification on the EIPA or other skills evaluation system as designated by the Nebraska Department of Education, Rule 51.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

 

Equipment:

  • Uses standard school and office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephones.


Travel Requirements:

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Signed Exact English, American Sign Language, and/or other sign language systems.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in communicating with Deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and the barriers faced by deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Ability to hear spoken language communication.
  • Ability to interpret spoken English at a rate appropriate for expected job performance.
  • Ability to voice for Deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Ability to understand and use proper English, including vocabulary and grammar.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate adult-student relationships with all students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

 

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

  • Works in standard school building environment.
  • Regularly required to use hands/fine finger dexterity to communicate with Deaf and/or hard of hearing students.

Qualification Profile:

  • Certification:  Competency in manual communication as defined by the Nebraska Department of Education, Rule 51.
  • Education: 
    • Sufficient training in manual communication to efficiently communicate with Deaf students.
    • Post secondary training/associates degree in sign language interpreting preferred.
  • Experience:  Successful prior educational interpreting expereince preferred.
